AFK Days

AFK is an abbreviation that stands for ‘Away From Keyboard.’  Stemming from the 90s internet chat rooms and instant messaging to today’s online gaming, AFK is used to let others know one is not currently at their keyboard or computer but instead is taking a time out from their digital presence.

We found ourselves spending most of each day at a keyboard, on the phone, or staring at a screen.  While necessary for our jobs, we were also letting ourselves get easily consumed by our many digital devices, screens, and keyboards during our downtime.  Another weekend would be lost to streaming services and scrolling feeds on our phones instead of being  active or pursuing adventures in nature.

For us, AFK is a call to action to unplug while seeking adventure away from the keyboards.  A call for us to be more intentional with our time and how we spend it when we are not required to be logged on and digitally present.

We created AFK Days to encourage ourselves to have more days away from the keyboard and to document how we are spending those days.  We are users of technology (professionally and personally) and enjoy the many benefits our digital lives afford, but we do believe in and seek moderation.  We acknowledge the irony of using a blog and social media to encourage others and ourselves to go AFK, but we also recognize the importance of connection and community it can provide.  AFK Days is a way for us to reclaim our time and focus on our interests and new adventures.

AFK Days is a project to help us seek this balance and we invite you to join us.

How are you going to spend your AFK Day?
